Les ours!

Here is a game I made up for my pocket chart that goes with our bears theme. These are some sight words that I expect my students to be able to recognize/read at this point in the year. We call them "Les mots magiques" and we practice them frequently and in many different ways. Using games is (obviously) their favourite way to practice so I made up this game.

I will hide a baby seal or fish behind one or two of the polar bear cards in my pocket chart and the students have to guess where it is (by saying 'un mot magique' and then turning over that same card).

The cards are here but you will find that the fish is not.. I sometimes make them out of scrapbook paper or even get fishy candies or crackers instead. (This makes the game even more fun!)

Le vocabulaire et les pingouins

This is a good vocab game for French Immersion teachers who do a penguin unit. This particular vocab focuses on the letters we are currently working on but could be altered to different vocab if you wish.

Penguin Word Match

Encore les pingouins

Here is a great idea I got from http://www.kinderplans.com/content.cfm?pageid=120 . The students match up the papa pingouin with an uppercase letter to the bebe pingouin with the same lowercase letter. This is a really good review and assessment activity at this point in the year.

Penguin Letter Match

Les pingouins!

In January, we started off learning more about winter and snow and more specifically snow men. In the 3rd week of January we moved on to "Les pingouins"! (My fav!) I borrowed lots of great ideas from other teachers and their blogs and made some changes and lots of translation to make them work for a French Immersion program. I will post links to the wonderful websites where I got my ideas in future posts but this one is one I made up quickly on my own. Just thought I'd share!

One-to-One Correspondence Worksheet

I also start simple addition and subtraction at this time. I usually find that my kids aren't ready for it until December or January, especially with the strong focus on language in the early months of the French Immersion SK program.

Here is a game I made up that ties our penguin theme to our math concept of the month. I have done it both 'worksheet style' or laminated and with dry erase markers so that they can play again and again. Students roll a dice and then write the number they rolled on the first line, then roll again and write the number they will add to it. Then they will use counters (penguin counters would be great, but anything will do) to help them with the addition. To make the activty simpler, a spinner could be introduced that only had numbers 1-4. This way, the numbers to be added together would always be lower.

This is the second page of the "Les ours" Letter Match Game.

"Les ours" Letter Match

This is a Letter Match Game that I created to go along with our "Les ours" theme. Students match the upper case letters (Papa ours) with the lower case letters (Bebe ours).

Baby steps...

So.. this is my first attempt at blogging. I have been 'blog stalking' for months now and my man has decided that I am a blog-aholic and that I need serious help, but I have yet to start my own blog. I am still trying to figure the whole thing out but I am dedicated to making a really great blog for all you teachers who are taking on the wonderful (and slightly daunting) task of teaching Kindergarten in... FRENCH! Oui oui c'est vrai... We are trying to simultaneously teach 5 year olds how to tie shoes, read and make strong connections with literacy, add, subtract, and problem solve and... speak a whole new language. No problem right?

If you are anything like me, you see the task as an exciting, fantastic, hilarious, wonderful challenge. Especially if you are, as I am, an anglophone and have taken on the task of  spending your whole day speaking in YOUR second language. Well... this was the basis of my soon to be blog. A spot where French Immersion Kindergarten Teachers could come to share ideas and see what I have come up with in the way of activities, resources, games, etc. that can be used in French Immersion Kindergarten Programs. I hope that you will follow along with me as I experiment and trek through the world of blogging and the beautiful world of Kindergarten.
